THE PASTEL PRESS

Newsletter of the Oklahoma Pastel Society

February 2007

Before we get to the rest of the newsletter, we’ve got to give Charlotte Rodgers a big round of applause (well, you know what I mean!) for her wonderful, entertaining and so informative Composition program at last month’s meeting.  I took pages and pages of notes and copied Charlotte’s uncluttered line drawings; these line drawings demonstrated beautifully the concepts as she presented them.  Thank you, Charlotte, for a great program to kick off 2007!

February Program

Our “Oklahoma Pastel Society Goes to the Movies” night a few months back was so fun as well as instructional that we decided to have another movie night!  This month’s “feature” is a demonstration – via DVD – by well-known pastel artist Albert Handell.

Mr. Handell was born in Brooklyn, studied at the Art Students League of NYC and then traveled and studied in Europe, particularly Paris.  He has had over thirty one-man shows, has written numerous articles for art-related magazines and has at least four books written about his paintings and teachings.  In the late 1980’s, the Pastel Society of America elected him into their Pastel Hall of Fame.  He and his wife, artist Anita Louise West, live and paint in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  If you’d like to find out more about Mr. Handell, his art and workshop schedule, check out his website at www.alberthandell.com.

This DVD demonstration we’ll be watching runs for approximately two hours.  Jan Hutchinson, OPS’s secretary, says that while Albert doesn’t say a lot in words, he shows a bunch of great techniques for pastel painting.

The meeting is on the second Monday, February 12, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. at the Will Rogers Garden Center (email or call Sue Ann if you need directions:  sueann@trademech.com or 405-330-5467.)  Donna Connelly and Judi Mott are providing finger food (think we should request popcorn?); just bring your beverage of choice.  See you there!  (p.s. Linda Battles and Leona Russell will bring snacks for the March meeting.  Have YOU signed up yet?)

Last-chance:  Special for the out-of-towners!

For those who live outside the OKC metro area and can’t be present for the monthly meetings, this is your last chance to register for the gift certificate give-a-way for all of the out-of-towners!   On or before February 9, 2007, you need to either email or snail-mail your name AND mailing address to sueann@trademech.com or Oklahoma Pastel Society, P.O. Box 75696, Oklahoma City, OK 73147.  (Janie’s email has been giving her some trouble, so if you emailed her with your info, please send it instead to Sue Ann NOW!)  Each OUT-OF-TOWM MEMBER may enter ONCE.  We’ve basically defined “out-of-town” as being any member who CAN’T reasonably drive to and from the meeting; if you live in the greater OKC metro area, you AREN’T out-of-town.

So REMEMBER, you have to email or snail-mail your name AND mailing address so that it’s RECEIVED NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 9th.  The drawing will be at the February 12th meeting and the winner will be notified ASAP.  Good luck!

Workshops – Dale Martin and Terry Ludwig

As we said last month, they aren’t “team teaching” a workshop but they’ll BOTH be conducting workshops for OPS in 2007.

Dale Martin’s two-day “Portraits and Landscapes” workshop is set for Saturday and Sunday, February 17 and 18, 2007, at The Rink Gallery and Antiques Mall, 3200 N. Rockwell, Oklahoma City.  Cost is $150 for OPS members and $200 for non-members.  Contact our treasurer, Janie Schmitz, if you’d like to take one of the few remaining spots for Dale’s workshop; call her at 405-943-0330 (home) or 405-942-3489 (work.)  Once you’ve registered, we’ll get a supply list to you ASAP.  Just so you know, Dale’s supply list is the stuff you’ve already got – small sketchbook, vine charcoal, pencil, pastels of your choice, paper (like Canson Mi-Tientes, Wallis sanded pastel paper, Art Spectrum Colourfix, etc.), paper towels, reference photos, portable easel/drawing board, etc.    If you’ve already reserved your place in Dale’s workshop (with a $75 check payable to OPS to P.O. Box 75696, Oklahoma City, OK  73147), your place is still there for you.  And if the rescheduled dates don’t fit into your schedule, your deposit will be refunded.

Terry Ludwig will be here August17, 18 and 19, 2007 for a 3-day workshop.  (He’ll also be teaching a workshop for the Ozark Pastel Society only a few days after he leaves OKC; you can contact Joey Frisillo, not only a member of the Oklahoma Pastel Society but also the current president of the Ozark group, at 918-242-3205 or by email at joey@joeyfrisillo.com.)  Just using any of Terry’s luscious pastels tells you that he knows a thing or three about painting in this medium.

This workshop won’t be outdoors – we all know how brutal August in Oklahoma can be. BUT, as long as “the good Lord is willin’ and the creeks don’t rise,” we’ll have Terry’s workshop at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum (formerly known as the Cowboy Hall of Fame) in Oklahoma City!  And to make it even better, the annual Prix de West Art Show will still be hanging at the museum.  Granted, we haven’t been able to set the fee for the workshop yet, but as soon as it’s set, you’ll know about it.

This shaping up to be a great year for workshops sponsored by the Oklahoma Pastel Society!

TAG NEWS

TAG is planning a party!  To coincide with the launching of TAG’s website in early spring, the board of directors of TAG is inviting members of all the current member groups, as well as any other interested groups, to a party.  Here are the particulars:  “Meet, Greet and Share Ideas” party (sponsored by TAG – The Art Groups; Advancing the Visual Arts in Oklahoma); Thursday, Marcy 8, 2007; 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the new Oklahoma History Center, Atrium Bridge; 2401 N. Laird, Oklahoma City, OK  73105; for more information, please contact Suzie Chelsea at 405-614-0558.  Everyone’s invited!

Some of our current representatives to TAG – The Art Groups have said they would like to “pass the baton” to other OPS members.  Debbie Flynn has volunteered to be one of our reps to TAG and Janie Schmitz has said she would stay on as a rep too.  TAG’s next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 20th, 2007; that might be a good time to take a look at TAG.  Please let Janie, Debbie or Donna know if you’d like to attend!

Membership Roster

Oklahoma Pastel Society rosters are either attached to the email version of this newsletter or are enclosed with the hard-copy of the newsletter for those of you who receive it via U.S. Postal Service.  If any of your information as shown in the roster is incorrect, please let me know; we’ll publish the corrections in March’s “The Pastel Press.”

Annual dues for membership in the Oklahoma Pastel Society are a low $30.00.  Please note:  if you are a brand-new member who has joined OPS between February 1 and May 31, 2007, you’ll already be “in” for our membership year beginning June 1, 2007!  If you’ve been an OPS member for longer than that, please send your check, in the amount of $30.00 and payable to “OPS” to:  Oklahoma Pastel Society, P.O. Box 75696, Oklahoma City, OK  73147.

Condolences

The members of the Oklahoma Pastel Society send their condolences to the following members:

Jeanne Carver following the death of her husband,

Ronda Zenker on the passing away of her father, and

Donna Connelly on the recent loss of her mother.

Please take a moment to remember your fellow members during their difficult times.

And Donna Connelly asked us to include this note from her family:

“My whole family would like to thank you all so much for the beautiful dish garden and the cards and letters that you sent following the passing of our mother.  This has been a very difficult time for us and your outpouring of sympathy has been wonderful.  I am lucky to be involved with such kind and generous people.  Thank you, Donna”

New Webmaster

OPS member Judi Mott has bravely stepped up to the plate (or should we say keyboard?) taking over the website maintenance duties from Jim Hiller.  If you have any questions or would like to ask Judi to add something to the website calendar, you can contact her at 405-350-2095 or via email at landondale@atlinkwifi.com.  Thanks Judi!

Shows & Events in the Pastel Community

International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS) 2007 Convention will be May 11 – 13, 2007, at the Hyatt Regency in Albuquerque NM.  You can download the flyer about the convention at www.pastelinternational.com or send a SASE to IAPS, P.O. Box 2057, Falls Church VA 22042.  Pre-convention workshops will be held on May 9 & 10, 2007; the Trade Show begins on May 11 at 6:00 p.m. and runs through May 13 at 4:00 p.m.

And one more thing…

The Pastel Journal magazine always encourages pastel groups to send them photos/slides/digital images of the prize-winning paintings from their shows.  So, any of Oklahoma Pastel Society’s prize winners who have images of their prize-winning works need to contact Donna Connelly at Donna.E.Connelly@faa.gov.  Thanks!
