"From the Ground Up"

Demonstration and Mini-workshop for the Oklahoma Pastel Society with Patricia Ridge Bradley

DESCRIPTION

I paint in layers, sometimes up to 30 of them! Done properly, layers give a deep rich visual effect, and imparts a bit of actual texture to a painting (that doesn't fall off!). I will bring three paintings to show the end-result of my technique.

In the morning, I will demonstrate my layering methods gathered from the teachings of many talented pastelists over the years, one of them our own esteemed, Jude Tolar. I will begin with a sheet of UArt buff 400-grit sanded paper and gradually build a painting of fruit on a plate "From the Ground Up".

In the afternoon mini-workshop, participants will choose from real apples, oranges, lemons and limes and colorful plates and bowls to practice this layering technique.

Get ready for an afternoon of fun!

SUPPLY LIST

• Bring your hard, medium and soft pastels in "fruity" colors, such as yellows, reds, oranges, and greens, along with complimentary colors and some neutrals.

Make sure they are clean and ready to use. I will have pastels to borrow if you need them.

  • Two sheets of UArt 400 9"×12" grit sanded paper. If you need some, I will have sheets for sale at the workshop at my cost. I'll bring a small paper cutter if we need to make smaller sizes.
  • One SWIFFER duster (the knock-off brands shed fibers into the pastels).
  • A cheap turkey baster (from the Dollar Tree, or a thrift store)
  • Nitrile gloves if you like to wear them to protect your hands. Vinyl is okay but may leach heavy metals into your fingers.
  • Beige masking tape (not the blue kind).
  • Backboard on which to tape your paper
  • Easel of some kind on which to work vertically
  • Apron

NOTE: If you have breathing issues, bring a mask. OPS will provide table and floor drop cloths.
